For Your Exquisite Hardwood Furniture
Care And Maintenance
A meticulously crafted finished wood slab is a testament to both the artistry of mother nature and the skilled hands of a seasoned woodworker. While nature sketches the canvas, a skilled woodworker adeptly addresses any defects, accentuating the wood's key characteristics to bring forth its nuanced beauty. Recognized as an investment, a beautifully finished wood slab demands vigilant care and maintenance to preserve its decorative allure. Here are essential steps to ensure the longevity and pristine condition of your cherished wood masterpiece:
Sanding and Finishing (For the DIYers):
Initiate the care process with the finishing of the wood slab. Achieving the desired sanding texture, the slab’s surface should be meticulously prepped and cleaned for the application of multiple finish coats. This sealing process shields the wood from both human interaction and the elements. The number of coats varies depending on the finish type; for instance, an Acrylic Urethane demands 3–4 coats, while an Oil-based Polyurethane necessitates 1–2 coats for comparable protection.
Care and Cleaning:
- Promptly wipe away water rings, spills, or standing liquids to prevent potential staining and damage.
- Periodically clean the wood finish using a soft cloth or damp sponge with mild soap. For tougher messes, use a specially formulated cleaner for fine furniture, such as Natural Lemon Oil Polish.
- Avoid harsh chemical or abrasive cleaning solutions that may contain bleach or ammonia. Always wipe surfaces dry after cleaning.
Prevention:
- Shield your wood finish from direct sunlight, as exposure to varying sunlight intensities can lead to discoloration.
- Keep finished wood slab furniture away from appliances emitting high heat or steam, as extreme temperatures can cause expansion and shrinkage, potentially damaging the wood finish.
- Manage humidity levels, as excessive humidity causes wood to expand, while low humidity results in splintering and cracking. Consider using a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer.
- Protect against water marks and temperature variations with the use of coasters, trivets, placemats, and hot pads.
- Dust regularly with a lint-free cloth to prevent dust particles from scratching the wood finish. Avoid silicone-based sprays; if dampness is needed, use a little water on the cloth.
Maintenance:
- Periodically touch up the wood finish, applying a coat or two every year or every two years to maintain its protective layer and shine. Sand lightly with a fine grit between applications.
- Avoid silicone wood products and opt for Hard Carnauba Wax or high-quality furniture oil for a light application that enhances the finish without attracting dust buildup.
