WOOD DEFECTS
For some, the imperfections in a wood slab is what actually make it the perfect piece for their project. What many people may call defects, some wood enthusiasts would refer to them as characters and highlights of the wood. However, there are some abnormality or irregularity found in wood that could be qualified as a defect. There are many different types of defects deriving from various causes. Some occur naturally such as rapid growth, fungal and insect attack, broken limb or other injury. Another category of defects are more innate and caused by the characteristics of wood in regards to the correlation between water vapor in the air and the shrinking or expansion of the wood. Furthermore, certain defects are more artificial and can be caused by mechanical mistakes such as the incorrect drying technique, or improper handling and storage, or inaccurate sawing and machining of the wood.
