Live Edge Slabs
Pricing - Wood Slabs
Determining the cost of Live Edge Wood Slabs involves a unique calculation method that sets it apart from traditional lumber pricing. Unlike typical lumber found in Home Supply Stores, Live Edge Hardwood Slabs are measured in board feet, a unit that considers the volume of wood rather than just the surface area.
A board foot represents one square foot (1ft length x 1ft width) x 1″ thick (rough-cut thickness, not the finish-planed thickness). While this calculation would be straightforward for wood pieces measuring 12″ x 12″ x 1″, Live Edge Wood Slabs often come in random widths and lengths, requiring a bit of mathematical adaptation. There are three methods to calculate the board foot amount:
- Length (in) x Width (in) x Thickness (in) ÷ 144
- Length (ft) x Width (in) x Thickness (in) ÷ 12
- Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Thickness (in)
For example, consider a Live Edge Slab measuring: Length 10 ft (120 in) x Width 1.5 ft (18 in) x Thickness (2 in). The calculations would be as follows:
- (120 in) x (18 in) x (2 in) = 4320 in ÷ 144 = 30 bf
- (10 ft) x (18 in) x (2 in) = 360 ÷ 12 = 30 bf
- (10 ft) x (1.5 ft) x (2 in) = 30 bf
Once the board feet are determined, you can calculate the cost using the price per board foot. For instance, if the wood is priced at $20/bf, your cost for the slab would be: 30 bf x $20/bf = $600.
